1988 Kawasaki mule problems.

Hello all I just recently purchased a 1988? Kawasaki mule 1000 and I just have a few questions. I’m not 100% sure of the year as the old owner had no idea and was very vague about it.

I bought this for 500$ and it had not ran in probably 2-4 years. When I went to look at it I jumped it and got it started although it would not stay running.

I have a question about the fuel pump and it’s operation. I can only get fuel out of it when I’m actually cranking. It will not spit out any fuel if I just turn the key on. Is this normal? Is the fuel pump only for help starting or does it continually run? If I’m cranking it I can get fuel coming out, it’s not a huge amount of
fuel but I feel it should be enough to get fuel to the carb.

Now i cannot get it to start at all and looking at the fuel filter it doesn’t seem like there is much fuel in it, not even a quarter full of fuel after minutes of trying to crank.

Just looking for places to start. Mainly about the fuel pump and how I should test it.

Thanks in advance.

Update -

i am getting spark but no fuel, I hooked fuel pump up to 12v source and it is turning on, it’s not sucking out the one side though for some reason. I’m going to replace the pump and hope that will get it started.
I tried also sucking fuel with it hooked up and it would not pull any fuel out so the pump seals must be done.
