Timing advancer cam play
I have a 1980 KZ250
I am wondering if anyone knows if there is supposed to be longitudinal (along the shaft) play on the timing advance cam? The cam on this bike can slide back and forth and ends up making a clicking sound. I think it may be missing a washer or something to prevent the play. I don't know how to get the timing advance mechanism bold off, i don't want to bend the backing plate. Does anyone know if that is a right or left handed thread bolt holding the timing advance mechanism on? thanks in advance. Mike |
Page 61 and 62 in your manual. Mentions the "E" clips and flat washers as well as the weights.
edit: check in your favorite fiche to determine how many "E" clips and flat washers are needed. |
I "rebuilt" the advancer cam mechanism and put in some spacers I had from another points type motor. The Play still exists, it's actually the cam moving in and out!!! I took off the left head cover and can see marks from where the cam was hitting the inner side of the left head cover. I thought part of the problem could have been a loose timing chain so I loosened the self adjusting screw. It made it a little better at idle but the play is still there. There has got to be a clip or something that would hold it's position to prevent lateral movement or is there some magic voodoo this engineer is missing? Also the tach gear still works, and the motor runs alright. I think it might need a new head gasket eventually but that shouldn't cause the lateral movement of the cam. Nucking Futz.
