Default Starting 06 KLX250S

Hi all. Bought a slightly used major neglected KLX recently. Basically sat for last 6 years. As a newbie working on this as a re-entry to bikes with my 16 yr old son, I am stumped. When it cranks, nothing. Hot or cold. With new float valve I'm wondering if I need to adjust level? It'll run, idle and rev once I spray but won't start on own unless I put a towel in intake side of carb. Could it be I need to complete air box install? Any help would be much appreciated.

I'd tear down the carb then take it to a shop or auto parts store with a carb washer or ultrasonic cleaner. If the dried crud in a carb gets up into small passages it can make them hard starting or so they only run on choke unless reved sky high.

While apart I'd also either do the KLX300 jetting described by the KLX250 Cheap Mods link inmy signature or do a Dyno Jet kit. Check the jets to make sure it hasn't been done. If it hasn't do the jetting, starts near instantly. One give away that it may have been done is if it has an adjustable needle.

Hope you get it worked out.

Thanks for tip. Went back in and focused on the pressed in starter jet. That seemed to do the trick. Now to find fork guards, no aftermarket for that year. Anyone know if there are some that work with a little modification?

I'm having a similar problem with my 06 klx 250. I can start the bike easy when it's cold, one or two kicks, but as soon as the bike gets warmed up it is impossible to kick start until it cools back down. I can roll start when hot fairly easy. The valves have recently been adjusted so the next thing I was thinking of checking were electrical issues. Has anyone else had a problem like this? Any advice would be great! Thanks!

Fork guards from any KLX300 or 650 will fit the 06-07 KLX250. They aren't horribly expensive from Kawasaki. Might find some used if you try. I don't think any aftermarket ones ever came out.

I bought some from Aliexpress, cheap chinese things that need extra holes drilled and don't fit well, however they are better than nothing. The OEM's fell apart after 9 or 10 years

Some KLX650 riders fitted some Suzuki MX guards. Forget which ones.
