Default Question regarding KX85 KIPS shaft

I am in the process of re-assembling the top end of my son's KX85 and I have hit a roadblock. When I removed the cylinder, the manual instructs you to rotate the KIPS shaft clockwise with a wrench to remove the e-clip, which I did.My question is, how do I re-attach the KIPS shaft to the link lever since I have slightly rotated it. The KIPS shaft is slotted and can only be inserted in one position. The shaft does not want to turn and I do not want to shear it by putting a wrench to it. I have tried turning the crank, but so far have been unsuccessful in getting it to properly engage. The KIPS shaft has a locator notch on it. Do I have to remove the side engine cover to align it with something inside?

Any advise or recomendations would be helpful. Photo enclosed

Thanks

I have not worked on one of those b4, I doubt you'll have to remove the casing though. Looks like turning the shaft should give the angle needed to get the ring into the shaft. I can't be sure though.
looking at the photo, you have already removed the barrel, so the crank should move freely. which I could help more.
