When i replace the fibers and springs in my bike do i need to replace the steel plates too? or can i just use the steel plates that are already in there? I think i'm going to go with these fibers and springs.

Unless the plain plates are heavily scored you can usually just replace the friction plates.

I have heard the best luck was from using the oem fibers and springs and not from aftermarket kits. Not sure, I am still on my oem clutch on the '90 zx7

 

The steels can be sanded shiny with some fine grit. Unless they are really blue, they are ok.

 

+1 on the being blued part. You can rough up the steels, but I have only used that method on some good concrete at the track as if you were lapping. (The figure 8 method of lapping a flat surface.) A good idea to do though in your shop when you install new friction plates and springs is to scuff up the steels.

 

I thought i heard somewhere that for heavier riders that it's best to use heavy duty springs. (I'm weighing in at about 250) I'm not really hard on my clutch but it seems to have worn out pretty fast.

That's why i was thinking about going with heavy duty springs and better fibers.

If your riding stock clutch up til now, replace it with the same. Watch for blueing in the steels, usually, if you ran the fibers to nothing, or ran on a slipping clutch.

Remember there's a sequence the plates sit in, based on thickness of the steels. In the ZX6, for a few years, they had a "stack height" based on the size of the basket. Get some tech specs before you re-assemble, just to be sure.

But if you just ride..........................stock steel is a #1.6. (there's 3: 1.6, 2.0, 1.4)With new fibers, you're good. Consider the miles on this clutch, that's how long you got til the next 1.

 

Well i bought the bike at 14,000 miles. It's at about 20,000 now. I don't know if the previous owner changed the clutch at all or not.

are you saying replace it with the same because it's what has worked and i should stick with it since it worked? or is there some other reason? like the stock fibers wore something in....

 

normally, I say stick to what has worked. And for me it has been oem.
