Hey everbody, I'm new here. Sorry if this has already been posted but i couldn't find one very similar to this problem. I'm hoping i can get some feed back on this little problem i having. I have an 06 ninja 650 with just over a thousand miles on it. My problem is this whining like noise i hear from the front end of my bike. it almost sounds like it may be coming from my clutch cover.
The noise only happens when the motor spins to about 5k or higher and i pull in the clutch to come to a stop. The noise is still present when i put the bike in neutral but it seems that if i slowly let the clutch out in first gear the sound goes away.

The sound is in sync with the engine RPM and it is a high pitched 'whining noise' almost like a frisbee or boomarang wizzing past your ear. if i open the throttle real quick and let off it goes away about half the time. Im not sure if it could be a shaft in the tranny spinning, cam tensioner, or (what must surely be a miniscule) radiator fan. Thank you in advance for any help

 

wow. only 1,000 miles. When did you change oil last, and what weight/kind?

Can you narrow the noise down a little. Use a mechanics stethoscope or a screwdriver to the ear, and see if you can isolate the origin of the noise a little better.

 

I bought this bike with only 600 miles on it back in May and the oil was changed at the dealer i bought it from. If memory serves me correctly it was 10w-40. BTW my mind is a steel......uh....
And unfortunately, it seems when i put the bike on the side-stand the noise just vanishes. As best i can tell it is either coming from clutch cover or right near the radiator.
I called a couple local bike shops(none of wich specialize in kawasakis or know much about parallel twins) and the ONLY suggestion i could obtain was toy with the cam chain adjuster....and they GLADLY said they could do that for me.Go Figure. This does not sound like a cam chain noise to me at all either.
Has anyone else experienced this problem or even heard of it. Thanks Guys

 

Have you checked the engine oil level?

 

Yeah. oil level looks good. And i checked some of the oil and there seems to be no signs of contamination or excessive break down.

 

IS it possible the whirring noise could be the fuel pump?

the whining is the starter drive assembly. All bikes have either a chain or series of gears transferring the power to the crankshaft. if it's a chain, then the tensioner spring is off or broken, allowing it to rub against something (usually the back of the clutch basket). If it's gear driven, the one way clutch gear on the system isn't free spinning, and the whine you hear is the starter motor spinning at engine rpm's.

 

Thanks for the help..And now comes the fun part of dismantaling. is there an effective way to fix this without making my head spin

 

Get a shop manual! It should not be too hard to fix if you have adequate mechanical skills.
