Default GPZ500S Starter issue

Hi,

After this forum successfully cured my cutting out problem, I now have a starter issue - When I press the start button the relay makes a noise and intermittantly the engine might turn over but not fire, however it bump starts fine!! Do you think the starter needs replacing or is it a starter switch problem??

Thanks

Carol..

How old is the battery? It may not be putting out enough amperage to spin the engine. Also Your start solenoid may have a bad ground, or the starter wire could be shot.

Hi,

The battery is about 2 years old, I checked it before riding and got ~11.8v, I bumped started it and took the bike out for a ride and with it still idling got ~13.6v. Switched off and tried the starter button and it started fine, left it for day and had to bumpt it again, looks like the battery needs replacing.

I went to go out for a ride today and checked the battery voltage prior to starting and it was 12.2 v, BUT would not start on the button!!!! I bumped it and went for a ride (10miles) came back and switched of retried the button and just got solenoid noise. retried two hours later and nothing from the button, I am guessing battery may be ok now???

Any Ideas?

Carol.

You're going to need a manual for the wiring diagram. It could be poor contact in the starter button, dodgy relay, dirty connectors, poor ground, corrosion in fuse block. You're going to have to systematically go through the wiring associated with starting.
Also if you can use a jump start battery you might be able to eliminate that.

Did you check the specific gravity of the battery cells? (Page 15-11 in my manual.)

I have not checked the SG yet, although level loooks fine. I went for a long ride this morning - great, got back and checked voltage - 13.5v (whilst bike running) revved engine - no change, switched off rechecked - 12.5v pressed starter button - nothing and no change in voltage? I dont know what to do - I dont want to waste money if I can help it.

Not sure if you have seen this in your manual yet.
