Pulling into traffic today my clutch cable snapped during an upshift. Got stopped okay, and good insurance got me a free tow to the shop I use. This is the problem. Almost no one lists the '88 250 Eliminator on their parts list. My shop and I have found that a number of parts interchnge with the '88 250 Ninja using compatibility lists, and the microfinch number for the clutch cable is the same for both bikes. But neither of us can tell if the micrifinch # is the same as the Kawasaki PN, and all the parts suppliers (theirs and the ones I have found) use different PN's without reference to any Kawasaki PN. Both are 54011 but the Eliminator PN ends with -1263 while the Ninja PN ends -1295. It's not a matter of cost it's shipping time. The Ninja part is 2 days away but the Eliminator part is on back order from their suppliers with no garranteed ship date. If anyone can help or knows where I can order one to get by Monday the 19th of July, it;s appreciated.

call them up for a delivery time and write it in stone. I have had only one issue due to that order in process crap that who knows when it would be shipped.

 

Typically the first part of the number is the part itself (a clutch cable). The last part is model specific, so if the first part matches but the last part doesn't in all likelyhood it will not fit. Hope you get riding soon brotha

 

You can take the inner from any long enough cable, cut it to length, keeping the lever end nipple, thread it through your existing outer and either do a bit of soldering to transfer the nipple from the clutch end or maybe fit a solderless nipple.

You'll need a proper cable with a new outer eventually, but you can get going this way. Once upon a time bike shops used to sell cable inner by length.

Thanks Dragone#19, my shop and I both lookd at Bike Bandit and this is where the P/N confussion started. They also said I could get it by Thrs. or Fri. next week (too late). Thanks Prom, when the owner of the shop was asked by the desk girl, he said the same thing, he's old school and he noticed that while some of the parts for my bike and the 250 Ninja are the same and some are different part numbers, he looks at the specs. of the part, in this case the length of the cable, and determened that the difference was neglegable and could be accomadated by the cable adjusters at either end, but the ship time is the same, so I'm better off ordering the right part. And that brings me to willianr, the cable snapped right at the nipple on the clutch lever and the end is frayed, so no soldering that back, but I've been lucky enough to find an independent shop with an old school owner who can, and still makes cables to length if he needs to, and that's what he's doing now. So with luck I'll be on the road Saturday, just in time to put some miles in before Monday, when the bike's going back in to have the forks rebuilt, new springs and all. And then when the new cable comes in, back for that. Thanks for all the help and advice.
An update: My shop called at 6:30pm and told me my bike is done, they made the new cable, installed, adjusted and tested it. Thanks for all the help.
