Blowing 30amp fuses - typical
Ok Riders,
I have a 1996 1500L in limited edition yellow and have been researching the tech threads for a few days now. My 30amp under my seat keeps blowing when she gets hot and/or when I get into high R's and come down. I also seem to have an "over-charging" issue associated with this because my electrolyte fluid in the battery seems to be evaporating also. Discussion A: One of my questions for discussion is this ... has anyone found this issue to be something "other than" an insulator worn out, arc'ing bare wire against the frame somewhere? Can't seem to find a wire touching frame metal. Discussion B: Is is possible I have a power distribution issue with the CDI box? There just aren't that many responsible electrical units between the magneto and the battery to zero in on. Thank you in advance for your ideas, comments & suggestions! Peace, KAW15 |
Check your regulator/Rectifier (pg 15-17 in your factory service manual) for starters and verify that the leads are tight and clean

+1 if your overcharging at high RPMs then your simply producing too much electrical power, the power should be limited by the stator/rectifier to prevent over voltage, sounds like a good place to start

Ok K-Riders, here's the story on blowing 30amp fuse in my case ....
After searching for about 24hrs on and off, I found an ignition wire under the belly of my gas tank, hidden from standard visual site, under the gas tank, from heat and age had drooped down unto my rear cylinder head, had melted the insulator ever so slightly but just enough to electrically rack my system to blow that 30 amp. Reading taken from battery terminals were normal to random spiking of dc voltage with NO pattern whatsoever. Lifted, retucked, and repaired the melted insulator and haven't had a spike in readings yet. I think this was the diamond in the rough! Cruiser has been running great ever since!!
