Default Adjusting The Clutch: '81 KZ 750 LTD

I did a job that required removal of the clutch plates. When I got it all back together, I had to adjust the screw at the lower left side of the bike that ensures proper engagement of the clutch, then tighten up the clutch cable, allowing for a bit of play when you squeeze the clutch.
The manual says to turn the clutch adjusting screw clockwise “until it’s hard to turn“, then back it out one half turn
When I did that, it took quite a few turns until it became “hard to turn”
Following these directions, the clutch didn’t engage at all
It wasn’t until I turned the screw quite a few turns counter clockwise, that I could get it to engage at all
I am concerned that the screw may not be adjusted properly

Dave, assuming you soaked the plates for about 1/2 hour in the lube you're going to use, and installed them properly, along with the springs, you shouldn't have any trouble with YOUR adjustment which engages the clutch. You might find, after a reasonable ride, you need to re-adjust, as the plates may need some time to get mated. I would bet that you will need to tighten things down a bit after the plates get familiar with each other.
If you put the plates (and spacer plates) in DRY, they will need some time to a. get soaked in lube, and b. get familiar with each other.
I wouldn't freak at the adjustment you have; go easy, but let them get some time together and I'll bet you'll adjust them back within the recommended spec.
Let us know, OK?

as mentioned, let us know and 1/2hr soaking is minimal as stated for a new install. Jeff knows his stuff, so no worries.
