86 1000R OVERHEATING PROBLEM
I recently purchased an 86 1000R. This motor runs so hot it literallyis melting the plastic fan. I've flushed the radiator (usedCLR to remove calcium build up). Flushed the engine, wrapped the header pipes, even removed the thermostat. The only way I could keep the temp guage down was by bypassing the stock fan electical hook-up and wire it direct from the battery to a toggle switch. Once the bike was running I'd turn the switch on. It kept the temp needle at about half way on the guage. This eventually lead to the demise of my battery. The bike has a Vance & Hines exhaust and "supposedly" a stageII jet kit. This is all I believe thats been done, or have been told has been done by the person I bought it from. I just want to ride the thing but, I don't want to risk killing the engine. I don't think it's the temp guage, otherwise my fan wouldn't be melting? Any suggestions?

might be running real lean.... ckeck your plugs, if theyre real white you gotta adjust the air/fuel mix.

RE: 86 1000R OVERHEATING PROBLEM
if you have rigged it so the fan is constantly running with not thermostat and the gauge is still high, even at speeds then the airflow is not the problem. It would have to be something in the system itself, either like KX said the engine is producing excessive amounts of heat, or there is some kind of issue in the cooling system itself, a restriction in the lines, blocked core in the radiator, or something. Its beyond me...

RE: 86 1000R OVERHEATING PROBLEM
I wasn't sure if it was a design flaw. Everything is so tightly packed in there. The header pipes are about an inch away (give or take a half)from theoil cooler and the fan itself. Maybe 2 inches from the radiator....I'm pulling the tank completely off this weekend and I'll check the plugs.
