636 Fram Oil Filter Bad?
 

has anyone else put on a Fram oil filter and had the oil light on thier gauges come on and stay on? i changed my oil over the winter and used a fram filter and when i fired my bike up a day or so ago for the first time in a while the oil light stays on. i let it run a bit and it sounds like its getting oil cuz its notticking loudly or anything. couple others mentioned that maybe its the filter. only other thing it could be is the oil pressure sensor being bad but it was fine when i put it away for winter. any help would be appreciated

For me, no, I wouldn't put a fram filter on my bike. I used a mobile1 filter with Amsoil.
I was just wondering though if your oil pump lost it's prime. Someone else may want to chime in here.
A while ago when I had my 500, someone tipped it over, I didn't know about it so it sat on its side over night.
When I started it up the nest day the oil light would stay on. All the oil had drained out of the oil pump.
I think a way to get it going again-don't quote me on ths-is to loosen the oil filter just enough to take the seal of the block, then start it up, wait for the oil to come out of the filter area, then shut it down and tighten the filter back up. Like I said-don't quote me on that-I thought I remembered reading about that on another forum a while ago. Someone else here may have some better advise on that.

welcome to kf. i'm assuming there wasn't a pool of oil under the bike when you got it back out, was there? If you don't think it's actually losing oil in some way, you might want to try what Pearl said, or maybe changing the oil again, which would kind of be a waste of money, though.

Thanx for the welcome. actually i thought about trying what pearl had mentioned but i didn't get a chance to last night, i lightly loosened the oil filter but had to quit for the night. as far as oil being under the bike no deffinately not, i do a lot of work with bikes and know a lot about the mechanics of a bike so i normally figure it all out fairly easy, this just kind of threw me a little so i figured i'd check with some others and see if anyone had any kind of a problem similar. the guys at a Kawi dealer nearby mentioned that if a drop of water gets in the oil pressure sensor switch that it will cause them to go bad so that may be all that it is. i'll try to loosen the filter and turn it over and see if it works. if not me and a buddy are gonna swap out the switch with his good one and then to change the oil filter if needed. not gonna change the oil again seeings how its spectro oil and is expensive, even though i have a sponsor and get it at cost its still wouldn't make sense to do so. thanx for the help guys. look forward to using the site a bit more in the future.

the 95-2001 zx6r and the zzr600 are prone to getting airlocked when replacing the oil filter or sometimes even if they get tipped over. to fix it you have to "burp" the oil system.

this basicly involves starting the engine, slowly losening the oil filter untill some oil starts to run out. about this time the oil light should go out then retighten and you are good to go.

dunno if it applies to the 636 or not
