Default 2nd gear wont work on my 97 zx600

I shift into 2nd and it pops back into neutral, so it doesnt work at all. I was just wondering, if i tottally skipped 2nd and rode the bike as is, will it damage the bike worse and eventually mess the bike up ? also if i pay a kawi mechanic to fix the problem what will The cost be? thanks in advance for the help- Timmy

it can be dangerous and could damage bike more. if u use kwak shop they rape u but most good bike shops fix for 150 to 200 pounds .

sound like your shift forks are bad, if you decide to do the work yourself or take it to a shop i would suggest replaceing 2nd & 5th gear because they are right beside each other and replace both 2nd & 5th gear shift forks aswell

I would not personnally. You are just causing more wear and tear on an other words good ride. Plus who knows what will happen to the rider if something locks up? If you can, take care of business now and then enjoy the full benefits of your ride.

park it and get it fixed...unless you don't mind spending more money to get it fixed...

splitting the cases is not a 2 hr job.

edit: take a peek at what your manual is describing on the tear down and on the install. The extra gaskets, measuring time is not listed in there either. I am looking in my 98 manual, so yes, things could be different, but I doubt it if it is the same engine.
