Question for zzrick
I've got a question for you about the jet kit installation. I'm gonna get started on it soon and my question is about the mixture adjustments once it's installed and started. It says that I need to be doing adjustments once it's warmed up. What did you do to keep the bike running without putting the tank back on to feed it fuel? How close to dead on was the 2.5 turns out on the mixture screws?

I did the 2.5 turns before I started it, they were dead on. There was enough fuel in the lines to let it run for awhile, so once it started and idled well for a few minutes I put it back together and rode it around the neighborhood to check it out. Have you messed with the carbs before? If not, make sure you are replacing the right jets, I was told that is a very common mistake by ppl. Also, be VERY careful drilling out the little brass plugs which allow access to the adjustment screws.

I messed with the carbs enough to clean them out, but never took any jets out. I've got the manual which should have all the info I need, but if I run into an issue would you mind if I asked you for advice?

Nope, I'll be around, you are removing the carbs to do this right? Because that makes things much easier. Just understand that the first jets you see are not the ones to replace, and don't drop the little plugs. Also make sure you have all of the little o-rings from the covers you remove because they are very easy to lose. I had to make a trip to home depot before putting mine back together:D

Ya, when I cleaned the carbs I replaced the o-rings.. Ordered new ones. I'll keep a sharp eye on them, they weren't cheap. Yes, btw. Definitely removing the carbs. I'm probably going to get started tomorrow. I'm excited.. But, hey. One more question.. I'm planning on replacing the muffler to finish the job, so I'm gonna use the recommended jets for an open baffle muffler, but I won't have the money for it right away so for testing purposes what would you suggest? Could I start it with the stock muffler removed?

I guess you could, but without enough back pressure the results could be unpredictable. I just did thesmaller jets and will replace them when I put my exhaust on this winter.I decided to do that so I could see what kind of power difference there was with only the jet kit,it has run great since, the only difference I have noticed is that when it isaround 45 degrees or less outside there is a huge flat spot down low.If you plan on riding in the coldthe bigger jets might be okay with the stock exhaust for a while. But it is your call. Good luck man,I'll check in after church tomorrow to see if you need anything.

I got the bike taken apart. It's slow going just because I goto my friend's house to work on it. I noticed that one of the carbs aren't perfectly in sync with the others so I stopped so I could get the manual to look up the process to doing that. I am curious though, it looks like it wouldn't be hard to just eyeball it without any special tools. Is that okay or do I need some spectacular device that adds lots of cost to the job?

The screws looking close isn't even the issue. It's the fins (I don't know if that's what they're called, but I'm calling them that) inside the carbs that open when you open the throttle. When they're closed one of them is just a hair open still and I'm next to positive I can make it exact without anything special. I'm not even sure how you would measure that, to be honest.
Edit: I'm working on it again on sunday. I'll look in the manual before then to find out for sure, but we'll see how it goes. I'll probably check it out tonight, I've just been busy and when I'm not it slips my mind. |
