KLR lowering kit

I just bought a 2018 KLR, I’m 5’10’’ but still can just touch with both feet so I was thinking about getting a lowering kit. Has anyone got one and have any opionions on what brand of struts to buy?

Before you change the suspension, check out one of the Seat Concepts low seats. These will lower seat height by an inch and will also be a lot more comfortable than the OEM seat during long distance rides. Definitely worth the $180 even if you are good with the KLRs seat height.

If you want to go even lower, then I would take a look at Eagle Mikes lowering link. This will lower the bike by an inch and as a free bonus makes the stock rear shock suck less (changes mechanical advantage so the shock is effectively stiffer).

I wouldn't touch the struts for ride height. You can just slide them up in the triple tree clamps to match the effects of the lowering link. If you want to do something meaningful to your bikes suspension then run don't walk to Cogent Dynamics. I ran a full CD setup in my 2007 and they (especially the Moab rear shock) completely transformed the riding experience of my bike. Biggest effect was off-road, but even on-road the bike had much better manners and was more pleasant to ride.

F.Y.I.

Friends don't let friends buy progressive rate springs. They don't really make any difference compared to just sliding the struts up in the triple tree clamps. Plus if you ride on dirt at all then you are eventually going to want to upgrade your front shocks to cartridge emulators. Both the Race Tech Gold Valves and the Cogent Dynamics DDCs work best with straight rate springs. Why pay for springs you are likely to end up throwing away.
