05 ZX6R - Keep shifting into neutral when upshifting to second

Ive been riding for about 2 months now and just recently (last 2 weeks) for some reason notice myself accidentally shifting into neutral when trying to shift into second. I notice it happens more when I am at a higher rpm but at times it will make a loud noise and sometimes rejects an attempt to get it into gear. Am I just not pulling up hard enough on the foot lever? Is this causing damage to the mechanics of the bike? Any and all information will greatly be appreciated. As I said, it just started happening recently as it never happened before when I first got the bike.

you have probably just gotten so used to how easily it shifts most of the time that your foot has gotten lazy and is not giving it a good full force shift all the way up.

Haven't changed to different boots. This can affect foot position. Try adjusting shift lever a little lower.

thanks guys, I think my foot definitely could be getting lazier and I'm just not giving it the force it needs. Ive also been told from my buddy on a ZX10 to try adjusting the foot lever. He said he had changed its position for the previous rider whom we are both friends with so it probably isnt necessarily my comfort position but rather I'm just dealing with it.

sounds like you may have found your answer then. Good luck

Check the chain tension. On Kawasakis it has to be set right to avoid difficulty shifting through neutral.

The 06-06 636's have this problem and it's fairly common especially after some missed shifts. I gets worse if not corrected. Kawasaki should have issued a recall or service bulletin for this problem. If it does it during hard acceleration, you may need to get the Shift Star kit from www.Factorypro.com ; about $160. I have an 05 that does the same but only during hard acceleration. It's shifts fine during normal riding. Hopefully the shift star fixes it; if not, it's the transmission gears not staying locked/ engaged.

Post this in the ZX6R section for more feedback.

i have an 00 kawi and mine does the same thing. but i think it is due to my foot getting lazy as well. usually i dont even use the clutch to shift i just slam gears. i've never had any problems with the trans.

I have a '07 650R and the same problem exists. It usually only happens after the bike has warmed up and under hard acceleration.

I have noticed that you can prevent it with a nice "hard shift". I have trained myself to shift with some force into second all the time and it occurs less often.
