Rust in my gas tank

I bought a 85 ninja 600r a month ago and I got it to turn over and run after a carb clean and ran it around the block a few times but noticed that it bogged down around 5 grand so I pulled and cleaned the carbs again which worked great all the way through the rpms. Then I went to bike week (without my bike) and when I got back, I fired up the bike and it ran rough, then it wouldn't turn over at all. I got sea foam and put it directly in the fuel line, no dice. Then I opened up the drain screws for the bowls and reclosed them to flush out the gas and sea foam. I them mixed 50/50 sea foam/gas. And put it through my fuel line. Still nothing. I noticed that there were some fine particles of rust in the gas. The inside of the gas tank is a bit rusty. Do you think the rust is my problem for the eninge not running and secondly do u know how to get the rust out of the inside of a tank? Thank you!!

Hey I just got done removing the rust from the inside of my tank.

What I did was remove the gas tank and seal up all the holes. Then removed all the gas and let the tank sit out for a good hour or 2 to let all the fumes escape. You could probably use a vacuum cleaner to expedite the process.

I sprayed an entire can of PB blaster in the tank and then put a pack of 2400 BBs in there and shook.

It's a bitch to get all of the BBs out, but it did the job

Gadz. Your arms are probably bigger than Popeye's, now? How long did you play human rock tumbler...?

I had to switch off with a buddy of mine. We probably shook it for a good 10 minutes at the least. Plus another 10 trying to get the last few BBs out.

I think Sherwin Williams has a few job openings for paint shakers..... :)
You've got a bright future ahead of you.

try to put a little gas into the carbs and see it the engine fires. If it does the carbs may need cleaned again. Take the fuel line off the carbs and see if there is fuel coming out of the tank. If nothing comes out the Petcock or the screen/filter on the petcock is cloged. The screens will crust with rust over time and if the tank is left empty for a long period of time the rust turns hard on the screen and wont let fuel flow. It also corodes into the pot metal on the petcock choking off the flow.

Another thing to check is your spark plugs. If you run too much of any kind of carb cleaner into the engine and run it your plugs will foul and look like charcoal causing them not to spark correctly.
