Poor mpg
2001 Vulcan 800 classic. Main jet is at 130 ( stock is 135) needle is non adjustable. Air fuel is at stock setting 1-3/4 out from bottom. Baffles removed from exhaust. Air filter is stock. Burning 1.0 gal per 20 miles. Cruising at 65-70 on freeway. I am aware that everyone is getting around 130-145 per tank. Any idea what to check ?

Hello
Ive got an 02 Classic 800. Im getting 50 MPG. I have Cobra slash cuts on it. I had to rejet the carb to match the new back pressures created by the exhauste. Removing the baffles definetly changes the pressures and theres no way to figure out the jetting required without trial and error. If you put a set of pipes on you can get the info required from the manufacturer. I had the pipes put on and they said they rejetted the carb. THEY DIDNT. and the bike ran very rich. I only found that out when I rebuilt the carb, they lied. I rejetted it according to the cobra specs and purchased the rejet kit from them and it runs great.I would start by overhauling the carb. Its not hard and not expensive. You can pick up a rebuild kit from amazon or ebay cheap. Plus, replace the floats. If theyre bad your gonna run rich. Running rich is not good. unburned fuel goes past the rings and down into the crankcase contaminatin the oil and making it thin out. good luck!
