Noise
 

I noticed I have some driveline noise, changed out rearend lube and it looked good, it may have allways been there, anyone else hear a funny noise as you let off the gas and coast down. 2001- 1500 classic.

The 1500 will be noisy, especially if the bike's been sitting in storage, no oil circulating for a while. You didn't mention how many miles your ride has on it. I also wonder if the noise is there at idle. Can you determine where the noise is coming from? Does it seem to change slightly with clutch pulled in and out at idle? May be clutch basket, they can make a thumping kinda sound.

Another thought.....all 1500s and 1600s have a counterbalancer shaft to tame the vibrations (see this link: http://fiche.ronayers.com/Index.cfm/...oup/Crankshaft ). This shaft is gear-driven off the crankshaft on the lower left side of the crankcase, and the gear has 6 or 8 rubber bumpers to drive the shaft. With age and miles these bumpers get hard and sometimes crumble, causing a knocking noise, most often noticed at idle. Yours could be more pronounced (due to mileage or other factors), therefore it is heard at other times as well. Just listen, if the rattle is more pronounced on the front lower left side of the engine it's a good bet the dampers are heading south. If they start to crumble you may find hard black rubber pieces in the oil screen.

Nothing to panic about really, a bit annoying and maybe a little embarassing when you are around Yamaha riders but it will run a long time before all the rubber is busted up and it starts hammering steel to steel.

To replace them you need to remove the left engine covers and the gear. You'll need the bumpers and a couple gaskets, and about 3-4 hours.

If all else fails, install a set of V&H longshots, you won't hear the noise!

While ridding say at 50 or 60 mph you let off the gas a little, warmed up been ridding for a while, every thing full, new clutch, OK, when everything is slack not on gas, sort of slowing down I have a noise in the drive line, does anyone else.

This write-up on lubing your drive shaft gives a pretty good detailed description of all of the related parts and how they should go together. It might be worth it to give it a read and make sure that all is in order on your ride.
