engine stalling

I have a little over 20K mileage on my 2001 Vulcan Nomad. Up to now, the bike has been reliable and low maintenance, but recently, I began experiencing an intermittent stalling problem. It happens after I have ridden the bike for distances in excess of 40 miles at highway speeds. The bike runs fine going down the rode, but as I throttle back to slow down, the bike dies as the engine idle begins to slow down. I have checked all the fuel lines, replaced the fuel filter and fuel pump and had the carburetor cleaned and rejetted. It seems like the bike is loading up on fuel as the bike is slowing down, and I sense that the engine and exhausts system are running hotter than usual, both by feel and smell, then black smoke begins coming out of the exhaust pipes, the idle becomes more rough and the bike dies.

Any ideas on what my problem might be???? Thanks,

Welcome to the forums.... At first guess I wuld have said carb cleaning. But you ruled that out...lol

Have you checked the Air filter? You might also double check the plugs... If the carbs were off, the plugs could have fouled, and when the heat range on the plugs max out, you have a misfire condition, hence running rich after she warms up.

If you have not changed the air filter, that could be it also. If it is dirty, do not blow it out. Just buy a new one.

Gl man...let us know how it goes.
