adding trailer
My question is. I wired in a trailer plug to the bike 2001 nomad fi. It works great . But when I hook it to the trailer after about a minute I blow the running lights 10 amp fuse. I rewired the whole trailer before I ever used it. I know it is possible I may have a ground somewhere, but has anyone ever had to upgrade there bike power output or upgrade to a 15 amp fuse due to the higher draw added with the trailer. My dealer is saying it's too much for my bike. The trailer only adds 2 left turn 2 right turn 2 running and 2 brake. The basic for a trailer. I am afraid to add a higher fuse if there is something else I need to be doing to my bike to handle the added draw. And yes the bike plug is grounded to the battery and the trailer plug is grounded to the trailer so I believe I am okay there. Thanks in advance for any advice..

RE: adding trailer
The extra load was the first thing I thought off. If you have an amp meter you can check and see how many amps you are actually drawing.

RE: adding trailer
the extra load thankfully was the problem. I upped the fuse to a 15 amp and it works great. I also took the bulbs out of my bikes tailend and just hooked up the trailer with the 10 amp fuse and that also worked. So I knew it was just too much for both to be on without a 15 amp fuse.

RE: adding trailer
Did you upgrade your clutch for the trailor?

RE: adding trailer
no I did not. I don't use it but maybe once a year. And so far I have had no problems. I did not know you could or needed to upgrade your clutch.

RE: adding trailer
It's suggested if you haul a trailor. My clutch is slipping (1500 FI 2001) and I had it replaced 12K miles ago. I need to know the best upgrade for it.

RE: adding trailer
I had a similar situation with additional lights. The answer for me was to use al LED lights. they have a minimum of current draw as compared to regulag bulbs. Keep in mind the size of the fuse is sized to protect the wiring. Upping the fuse might just fry your wiring.
