I play bass too. I like the Rotosound RS88s swing bass coated... I"m gonna go get my bass, and ****-off my girlfriend right now. I would start with #10s and work from there. heavier strings deeper tone, lighter strings, lighter tone. What is it that Master Shake said? "I need light gauge strings if I'm gonna shred".

An electric is easier to learn on, and for about $100 you can get a new Fender Squier Bullet. Its a pretty decent sounding guitar for that cheap. Or Gibson made a remake of their Les Paul Melody Maker, for $350, made in USA, and it sounds and plays pretty good for a no-frills beginner guitar. They have a sound demo on their website,and although they are playing it through a very expensive amp, I'm sure, it still sounds good on a cheap one. Strings are just personal preference, like the other guy said. Good luck! At least ya got a bike to go ride when you get frustrated trying to learn to play!
