I don't actually drill so to speak, I work for a directional drilling company called Directional Plus. I run tools that tell us our direction and angle and stuff so that we can steer our wells. Right now we're 2000 meters below ground and another 1000 meters horizontal, with another 400 to go.

quite simple actually here goes:
I have a computer that goes into the ground at the very end of a drill string (somewhat close to the drill bit) it opens and closes in a sequence of binary code, relaying information. the information is sent up to surface using the pressure of the mud system (the fluid that is pumped down through the drill string and upout the hole. the opening and closing changes the pressure and is read by a device that is put into the standpipe of the rig, where the mud is flowing. it creates a positive pulse effect, which is then decoded by software on my laptop to give us actual numbers. these numbers are your inclination (anywhere from 0 degrees to 90 degrees and higher if you need to drill upwards while horizontal) and your direction which is given to you from 0-360 degrees like a compass. we can steer the drill bit at the bottom of the drill string to go in the direction that we want, which is in this case north west direction, and build up to 90 degrees, so we're actually drilling sideways about 2000 meters below the ground.
make sense? high tech and expensive, but pretty damned cool.
