I use Ubuntu Linux on my Samba Server (Think of it as a home file server) where I store all my DVDs, CDs, MP3s I've ripped, etc. I have about 5TB of stuff on my samba server that I share out over my network to my other computers

I also use it in my security work to perform penetration testing (not "that" kind )

If you have multiple computers, or an older one that you don't use as much anymore, Linux is a great OS to throw on the spare system. You can set it up as a dedicated firewall, router (if it's multi-homed) or file server and it pretty much runs forever.

You can place that menu (the one at the top) at the bottom of the screen.

You just need to go into your preferences section and play around with it to set it up the way you want it to look.

You can also enable your 3D accelerated desktop through there. That lets you set up Compiz/Fusion, which is pretty nice if you have the hardware to really push it.

Linux is *** backwards from windows. It is more command line driven, meaning that if you don't already know what to do the program isn't going to help you with it like windows will.

Linux is a solid platform though. It is great for hosting websites off of and etc.

LOL. I can start with an unpartitioned hard drive and be on the internet with a fully firewalled and configured machine in under 40 minutes without touching the command line even 1 time.

It's Windows that's ***-backwards.

You can partition a hard drive and have windows going in about an hour as well boo. Windows has been simplified for all the ignorant computer users. I especially hate Vista because it is dumbed up for the idioicricy we have nowways.

linux is by far better then win/ mac. it's simpler and uses much less of your systems resources like ram or cpu power. that's why it works so well on older computers. it's so light weight that the older stuff can push it just fine. not to mention how secure it is. but the best thing about it is the fact that it is free. sticking it to the man is what it's all about
