Pardon my ignorance here since I am not a captain but a mere builder of these massive vessels, but HOW IN THE F&*K DO YOU HIT A VESSEL THAT IS LONGER THAN A FOOTBALL FIELD??? Dude, those tankers are several stories high. Approximately 10 stories = 100 steps. LOL! GEEZUUSSSSS!
Then I Thought. Taking A Nap, Reading A Really Good Mystery. Or
Maybe Texting Friends

all of her "electronics" did not warn her....... you can't be at the helm 24/7
one of the failures was the ship is supposed to try and hail her on the VHF
they saw her but did nothing until it was too late.
there were simple things like horns to blow......
and I think her own auto pilot; or helm nav unit has a radar for large objects like ships and say.......... LAND.

If you read the report more closely it stated she did not have 2 of the required safety systems active at teh time of the collision. If she would have she would have avoided the collision entirely. Alsok, the report stated that she saw the ship but paid no attention to it because he ship was on her STBD side.... well, the ship also had the sailboat on the STBD side. They were headed for each other!
I'm sure the ship blew the horn. But, if she were navigating properly she would have known that the ship had the right of way and would have gotten the heck out of the way. Her judgment at 16 has not fully developed and because of this had almost cost her her life.

I read an article today where the dutch courts forbade a 13 year old girl from starting a circumnavigation. What kind of a parent would let there kid try that so young? From experience I can tell you that a ship you see as a dot on the horizon turns into a mass wall of steel in an awful hurry.

I'm thinking she was down below doing her hair for the big show when she got into port.
you mean you have to turn this little thing here to the "O N" postion for it to actually work?
16 yr Blond---- its a joke just waiting to happen.
