Sudden stall

Sudden stall
It has happened twice.About a month agowhen I went to fill up and then tried to re-start and the bike was dead. Very little pull from the battery. I had to get a push.
The second time was yesterday. I let it warm up for a few minutes then grabbed the throttle and wicked it up a little. When the rpms came back down, they didn't stop at idle. It stalled. I tried to push-start it myself but couldn't get the speed to turn the engine over in 1st.
So - Does the stalling for no apparent reason happen much?
Also - If the bike is stopped, should I be able to shift up to 2nd, 3rd and so on to make it easier to push-start? I was locked in 1st and could only shift to neutral.
The bike is in great shape and I plug it in to a tender every night.
Thanks

RE: Sudden stall
If your battery has a dead cell, or is going bad, it can cause stall probs. Get the battery checked....any autoparts store should be able to do a free test for you. Check all the connections. Might as well check the alternator output also. I would lean towards bad connection, or battery.
It would be better to try and push start in a higher gear......

RE: Sudden stall
when a battery starts to short out (due to the buildup on the plates..) it draws a higher electrical load. this higher electrical load in turn translates to a mechanical load on the stator thru the magnetic field that generates the power to start with.. l
like if your car is dead, and you jump it. you can hear the whine or the alternator at idle.. or if you hook your car up to someone to jump them.. your cars idle speed will drop.. electrical load translates into directly proportional mechanical load in AC generating systems.. (well, DC too, but all DC in cars and bikes is sourced from AC anyway..)
but yeah.. +1 to BR and his sage advice.. a new battery will probably fix the problem.
