I picked up my '06 KLX 250s yesterday and a friend was nice enough to ride it home for me. I had ankle reconstruction a week and a half ago so it's in the garage. I have never ridden anything bigger than a 50cc scooter but my father-in-law, who runs the local bike service department, said this would be a good starter bike.
I plan on taking the MSF Basic Course once the cast comes off and getting my license that way. I have a 30 mile ride to work on back roads and I am hoping to save some money on gas, I'm also hoping to explore a little more of the Adirondack Park on trails.

I've had a few chances to ride with the walking boot I have to wear. I already popped a tube with a staple and proceeded to then soon the rim and rip the stem out of the tube. It seems like rims locks are more of a "why not" add on for me since I will be riding with high psi with mostly and so far all street riding.
I did a little over 150 miles yesterday through the Adirondacks and now I can say I get it. That was awesome. Also the seat hurts after a short while. But at $3.79/gallon I get a sore bum no matter what I drive. You get it? You see what I did there? Next week I have a 300 mile for a follow up appointment for the surgery and I plan on riding if it is nice.
I am concerned about having riding it full throttle for so long anyone have any experience or ideas or recommendations for keeping up with 70 mph traffic? The mountains will kill the speed I have already seen that.
