Clunking Noise when decelerating and accelerating
Hi. I just joined the forums. I think this could really help me out.
I bought an 01 Ninja 500r about 8 months ago. My first street bike. I bought it used off of craigslist. Its turned out to be a nice starter bike for me, its been laid down a few times by previous owners, but its my first bike and so i dont worry about it too much. It does have quite a few miles on it, i think 17000.. but...
I was just curious. Recently I drove my Bike about 400 miles, all on highways in a 3 day period. I went to Dallas for a weekend and my bike was my only transportation. I went at least 80 for pretty much the whole way, sometimes getting up to around 110 or 115, but most of the trip was around 80-90 mph...
But, I noticed while I was getting off the highway on the way home, that it started making this weird clunking noise, and the bike would jerk a little bit each time it made the noise. This would happen whenever I would decelerate by downshifting and not using the brakes much(whatever thats called) and also whenever I would accelerate, it wouldnt matter how fast I would accelerate/decelerate. It would almost always do it. I also noticed that when this started, my oil light would come on for a second, then turn off again, it did that a couple times..
Is there something about my methods of driving or something thats harming the bike? I think I should put oil in it. But I dont know what kind to get or use????
Once again I know absolutely nothing about maintenance other than to oil the chain every 5 or 6 hundred miles. I would love to learn more though. Any help would be nice!
Thanks
Jordan

welcome to the forums.
research doing an oil change and do it or take it in ans have it serviced.
clunking, has the chain ever been serviced, adjusted, changed ?? start there.

how much play does your chain have (how much can you wiggle the bottom stretch)? if its to loose it may be hitting the casse, or skipping teeth, or both[>:]. it should have about 1.5in of play
and, i think the oil light thing is normal. my wheeler does it about 10seconds after starting. but if you do find out that sompething is up with it let me/us know, id like to know if somethin's up.
oh, and welcome kf

wlcome to KF!!!
aside from the chain, any intermittent fuel starvation or ignition losswill give you the same feel.. doubt you have any(internal)driveline damage tho..
rule out the simple stuff first, and keep us posted!!
good luck

Welcome to KF, I have to agree with everyone else. Try the simple stuff first they're the least expensive, so you wont be out a whole lot if those weren't your problem.

Hey Jordan, sorry for the late welcome, usually I'm right on new members coming on site, but I was out of town this weekend, and I still haven't figured out why I can't post or comment from the Blackberry. Again welcome, hopefully one of thee guys can help you out.
