'82 KZ100
Hey there KF members, I'm new here and just wanted to swing in and say hello.
I finally broke down and bought an '82 KZ1100 today. It's been for sale on the side of the road since last October, (taken in at night and when raining), and was originally priced at $2,800.I had called around to get a feel for weather or not it was worth the price and most said it was well worth the $1,500 range. I started calling the guy this past week and took the bike today for $1,000 cash. After looking around for other bikes, (e-bay, other classifieds, etc.), I think I made out pretty well. Thoughts?
Well, I've never ridden before so I took the bike out and rode in circles around my yard for 25-30 laps before I took it down the road a couple of miles. It ROCKS!!!. Towards the end I even got it into 2nd gear. Not a major accomplishment but it made me happy...
Unfortunuatly, I was given a free life lesson with my riding lesson. Soon after getting it into 2nd, I discovered that you should never trust the gas gauge on a25 year-old motorcycle. I should have picked it up when itwent down to showing 1/2 tankfrom a full tank with only 30-40 minutes of riding. Life lesson number next, they sure do move easier when that motor is running. I pushed that thing up hill for almost 2 miles.Regardless, I'll get some more gas in it tomorrow and continue on.
I'm scheduled for a basic riding course here locally on June 9thand hope to get my license immediatly after. Wish me luck.
Any suggestions about the best place to get a refurbished instrument panel, or a better replacment? It's also got a slow lead in the valve for the air shocks and has a rattle with some kind of starter rod on the lower left-hand side. The guy said he had taken it apart and looked at it and that it was nothing but I assume there is a missing spring of some sort. I found a manuel at http://www.themotorbookstore.com/kaw1011four1.html. I'll keep looking around but so far that's the only one I've come across. I'll try to get some pictures up later.
Again, glad to join the forum and look forward to the plethora of wisdom that hangs out here.
Till then,
B. Wilder
