Will a '09 tank and wings fit on an '06? With '06 seat?
Hey guys!
Crazy question time:
I'm turning my KLX into a woods bike that just happens to be street legal so that I can take it and my KTM250XC out with my dad and be able to swap back and forth and still have fun doing some trail riding. The first thing I have done were the 0.46 fork springs and the 6.0 shock spring and I'm amazed at the difference! Next I'm planning a quicker throttle and an extended tank. My 2-stroke has a nearly 3 gallon tank, and while it's a thirsty 2-stroke, it's still good for almost a 2 hour race with me working the controls. I'd like to get the range on my KLX up a bit so I've been looking into tanks.
Looks like the Clarke tank is a good option at around 2.7 gal.
The IMS KLX300 tank can fit with modifications to get a bit more capacity. I don't care much for the look of the older shrouds I'd have to run, but IMS has been sponsoring me for a while and I would much rather run their product, which brings me to my question:
Does anyone know if a 2009 KLX tank would fit on my '06 if I ran the '09+ radiator wings as well? (and would those wings even mount?) If so, that would give me a 3.0 gal option, which would be great! However, I don't want the forward sloping seat of the new bike for heavy off-road use. I've heard that the '06 seat can fit on the '09 bike? Does anyone know for sure if that's possible? I did try a few searches and didn't come up with an answer... sorry if this has been discussed...
Thanks for the help!

It looks like IMS uses the same tank for the 300 and the 06/07 250's. It says that you would need to use the shrouds for the 250 to make it work. I don't know if the 09+ uses different mounting points for the plastics compared to the 06/07. I like the Acerbis on mine-it's been VERY durable and offers great protection for the rads.

tank
I have a 2007 klx250s my dad wrecked and I ended up buying a 99 klx300 frame and fitted all the 07 stuff to it. The 07 tank ended up being bent pretty bad so I found a 09 tank and plastics on forum here and fitted them. The seat from 06-07 to 09-newer is different. I cut bottom of my 06 seat to fit 09 plastics no problem pretty easy deal. The shrouds from 06-07 to the 09
bolt up different on tanks, tank bolt holes are in different location. Tank fits no problem tho. I ended up with a 2001 kx250 seat on mine because I am going for more of a mx look on mine. It will fit with some minor alterations.

A guy here had a KLX300 with a CRF250 tank in it.. I never saw it up close, so I don't know how well it fit.
- He said he heated nuts and pressed them into the side of the tank to be able to mount the KLX shrouds
