Default What is this part and why is it capped ?

What is the use for the bottle that's hanging off the pipe, which if my memory serves me well, leads back to the tank, making it some sort of breather or gas overflow collector?. The one that has a cap on it. Which kinda defeats it being an overflow, if that's what it is... Clearly i have no idea what it is, so i come to you internet friends !!!!

Anyway i've lost the cap, and wondering what it is, and if i should bother replacing the cap?

I think that's the drain for the air box but I'm guessing. I have to work on the bike tonight so I'll check.

That little translucent bottle and capped line is the drain from the air box. It is a pollution control, keeps any oil from dripping out on the ground. They figure you will uncap and drain the mung out and properly dispose of it.

Most people uncap it or take it off at the bottle.

Yes its definitely a drain / breather from the air box... Had a look on kawasakiparthouse.com

Does that much oil ever come out of the airbox ? What incase people spray up their filters too much or something ?

If you oil your filters with regular oil, it run's out.

Could be a problem with it open and with it closed.

Closed, if water gets in the air box there is no escape. It will lay in there until drained... or sucked in the carb. Not really too likely an issue unless you get in serious WAAAY deep water that goes in the snorkel or in over the edge if no lid. Or if you spray water up under the seat area and enough gets in there.

Open, if you get in deep enough water it will come up through the breather into the air box. Only could happen if you spend enough time in water above the carb line of the air box where it can actually fill up.

Is either scenario likely to happen? Probably not. But there is the possibility if you get in the extremes. I don't, so I don't worry. I have it open. I don't plan on submarining the KLX.

Most people just remove it, many times after it has been smashed on a log etc. The whole thing is there to save the environment,,,, Catches the oil so it does not just drop onto the ground..... Probably dictated by EPA or Kawi lawyers. Mines been gone for years.
