Splice into the black/yellow wire, like a "T", and put that additional piece of wire to ground somewhere. Makes a huge difference at around 5-6k rpm's.

Okay, thanks. I'll give that a try.

Finally got around to trying the ground wire mod last night. It did make a difference. Voltage at the battery increased to just over 14 volts, which is about a volt higher than before. Thanks for the suggestion.

I removed the wire+contact from the electrical connector, soldered on a wire to that contact and inserted back into the connector. You will need a electrical connector tool to release the prongs of the connector

Brilliant. I just added the ground to the B/Y wire, directly to the ground on the engine block, and voltage at 5k rpm went from 13.8 to 14.2. Free the volts!

I get a sudden surge of power when I hit round 6k RPM. I'm curious if that would have anything to do with this problem? It doesn't seem to bog or lose power before then, it just hits 6k and there a nice moderate burst. Does that sound like anything you guys have been experiencing?

I had put this down to my EFI fuel controller, but now I wonder...

IS there any benefit in running a positive to the battery as some people have done or is the extra earth enough ???

Extra ground was all I needed on my 2009 klx , over a volt gained.

When i went to do the earthing mod for the regulator. I thought i would stick to the standard wiring. I have 2 spare stators, so i thought i would cut the black yellow wire from a spare to use as my earth to the starter mounting bolt. when i stripped the insulation back the wire was all black inside. So i thought i would use the white one. Same problem. So i ended up using some spare wire i have laying around , albeit the wrong colour. Perhaps the problem with the KLX is the size of the wiring from the Regulator . My 2 cents.

Is it okay to simply leave the black/yellow unplugged completely if a sturdy ground is attached to that lug of the R/R? Thanks!
