Default Older KLX 250's???

Hello all, I've searched and searched and I can't find anything about the older KLX 250's from 1992/1994(ish) until 2005??

I've found all kinds of info about the 2006/2007's and 2009+ KLX250's but, I've never found a bike harder to find info on than the early 90's to 2005 KLX.

I mean, I can't find anything about these bikes! Are they the same as the '06/07's? Were they the same from the early 90's up to 2005?

I ask as I had a friend who owned a street legal KLX 250 back in the late 90's. As I recall it was a '94 or so. I had never heard of the bike back then but remember thinking it was a very cool bike.

My friend passed unexpectedly about 10 years ago. I'm now looking for a small, inexpensive, reasonably light dual sport I can ride when my wife and I go exploring (she has a XT250). I'd like to find an earli(er) KLX to restore (I restore cars for a living), sorta an homage to my old friend.

Unfortunately I can't find anything about these bikes!

Can anyone tell me anything about the early 90's to mid-2000's KLX 250's or, point me to a resource for information?

Thanks!

Brian

I had a 1985 KLR 250 , very similar to out KLX's, street legal etc. and it seems like they made those up into the early nineties. I don't think they make the factory street legal KLX until 2006...In the US at least . maybe you are thinking of the KLR's?

Thanks guys for the replies so far.

It was definitely a KLX I am sure of that. It was also a factory dual sport.

I've seen them for sale on Craigslist, various years, usually mid-90's.

I remember they were unique in that they had USD forks back in the 90's which was up until then reserved only for motorcross bikes.

I'll find a pic of a mid-90's KLX 250 dual sport and post it up.

Thanks!

Here's one. The site I found the picture on says it's a 1993 to 1994 model but, that's also an Australian site. My friends bike looked exactly like this, same colors and all.

Is this the same bike as a 2006/2007 KLX 250?

Thanks!

Really think you are thinking of a klr. 2006 was the first klx250s.

Maybe he had a klr250?

They didn't change much, minor changes mostly cosmetic. Maybe some minor suspension changes

The KLX was originally a twin shock bike. It has been around a long time.
And that motor(from here) looks identical to my 2012's. Inside of the motor might be a different story.
