RE: KLX300 Street legalizing???
I was sold on the KLX250S by reading aboutthem on these and otherforums, but come to find out they weren't legal in Ca.(didn't pass the smog tests I hear)! But I found a KLX300R (2002) that was already dual registration (green sticker and Ca.plates) a grandfather clause which has made me a happy camper now that I can kick start it (couldn't when I bought it) LOL!

My opinion on the vermont thing is I don't think I really want to buy a new wr250f, file all of the vermont papers and find out I am some where screwed and be stuck with a non street legal bike. If I can find bike with a off road title for a couple hundred dollars I will try and see what happens.

but yeah MO has some pretty easy requirements to get a vehicle licensed for road use AFAIK.

I think we're even more relaxed in Idaho. As far as I can tell, take the title in and get a street plate. They don't look at the bike. I have a street plated XR250 and will be plating the KDX220 soon. Ups the resale value for someone wanting to take it out of state.

Lets face it, it is all what you can get away with. Some states are tight.
One dirty maneuver would be to remove numbers and stamp numbers from a DOT legal bike on the KLX300 or whatever. Find a totaled bike with a clean title and do the dirty deed, but make sure the other frame has the numbers obliterated with a cutting torch so you can "use" them. A couple stickers for a KLX250 on the plastic and who's the wiser. Take a KLX450 and get a KLX650 or even KLR650 frame/title and some stickers... it could be done and most would be clueless, especially if the frame numbers match up to the title. A little welding, grinding, and die stamping - Bob's your uncle, you got a whole different bike!

I think it might get a little more difficult then that. I know you can get a White Plate (restricted use) but a Red White and Blue plate maybe a different story. I think it all depends on the person that is helping you that day.

Perhaps, but I don't know of anyone refused a street (red/white/blue) plate and we live in the big chitty where we would expect more nanny. My XR250 and buddies with XR250, WR250 (x2), KLX300, and DRZ400 all have street plates. None of which were street from factory and they certainly aren't legal now. Our experiences have been go in, tell them you're riding on the street, pay the fee, get a plate, grin.
I have put white plates on the '95 Honda quad and a little Honda 150 I bought for the boy.
