Default KLX250sf to a KLX250s 2009 Model.

So I have the sf, with shinko's but kind of miss the road tires, and well, bought myself an 09 rear wheel off fleabay for $200.. which includes the sprocket and disc rotor.

I STILL NEED THE FRONT, if anyone wants to respond to my WTB in the classifieds section.

Anyway question being, the swap (once i get the front) which i know uses a different disc rotor, which is fine as i'll have each wheel with its own rotor, should be straight swap right ? The only difference is the speedo will be off (don't care) and the bike will lean over more than a typical S cos of the shorter kickstand (don't care)

Outside of a little chain adjustment, is there anything I'm overlooking ?

Thanks in advance.

Kickstand height is different and front brake caliper mount is different as well.

Yikes it seems there's a few changes going on kawasakipartshouse.com

The SF has
41080DISC,FR,HOUSING BLK+DISC SIL
41080-0187-11I
$242.98

43044HOLDER-COMP-CALIPER,FR,LH
43044-0026
$126.43

43048PISTON-CALIPER
43048-1066
$56.98

43049PACKING
43049-1063
$5.28

43049APACKING
43049-1064
$3.75

43080CALIPER-SUB-ASSY,FR,LH,F.BLACK
43080-0064-25S
$308.28

43082PAD-ASSY-BRAKE
43082-0087
$59.16

On the S its

41080DISC,FR,SILVER
41080-0172-CM 41080-0186-CM
$235.38

43044HOLDER-COMP-CALIPER,FR
43044-0007
$126.43

43048PISTON-CALIPER
43048-0011
$53.56

43049PACKING,PISTON SEAL
43049-1060
$11.92

43049APACKING,PISTON SEAL
43049-1061
$6.35

43080CALIPER-SUB-ASSY,FR,LH,SILVER
43080-0048-GN
$308.28

43082PAD-ASSY-BRAKE
43082-0060
$55.00

49006BOOT,CALIPER
49006-1088
$7.02

92160DAMPER,FRONT WHEEL
92160-1449
$42.71

So from what i can tell, you can't just swap out the wheels without switching out the caliper and doing a bleed, UNLESS you're able to put a sf Rotor on an S wheel and perhaps the 92160 DAMPER, and make it work with the existing caliper, it seems like its going to be more of a pain to switch back and forth, and maybe easier just to swap my 17" shinko's back and forth than all the above.

Has anyone done what i'm trying to achieve ? What's the deal ?

Just get a spare hub/disk for the same model you have and have it relaced to a 21" rim. Then you can change the wheels in 20 min.

Same caliper different bracket. There may be a different part number due to color change. Same things happen when the rotor centers change color. Nothing else.

You would need to get the 300mm rotor. If you found a bargain on a KLX650 rotor it will work too. Just not the cute petal cut look. I know this because I have both a KLX250 and 650. Fact is my 250 has an earlier 220mm rear rotor with the proper carrier and a matching 260 (I think, not sure) front brake rotor that was marked as from a KX. They match and function properly, just not the petal cut design. I happen to have a KLX650 hub/rotor I considered putting the rotor if I could get the carrier, but the stock set up works so well I didn't bother.

One other possibly lower cost option would be to get the carrier from an S and use the smaller more common less costly S rotor on both sets of wheels. I picked up a spare front rotor off ebay for $20 including shipping. I couldn't pass it up for that price.

As for hubs if you want to go on the cheap, you can fit hubs from a large number of models by going to a Vapor electronic gauge setup. That might be a good way to go if you can quickly program for the 17-21 switch for the speedo. If you want to stay with the stock speedo you're either going to have to live with speedo error or swap out speedo/wiring at wheel switches.

I'd do the Vapor setup and get a used KLX/KDX wheel that matches up with the rotor bolt pattern, maybe with the rotor too.

So if i'm reading that right, on top of the two actual wheels just get another 43044-007 (off the S microfiche) to fit for the SF setup, which is what i think you guys mean by the carrier ?

Then find another S rotor and put that on the SF front wheel and job done ?

What about the rear ?

92160DAMPER,FRONT WHEEL
92160-1449

That part doesn't even exist on the SF what exactly is the damper ?

Thanks in advance !

Carrier is the bracket that fits the caliper to the fork. May or may not be the right name. You need the bracket for an S if you want to run that size front rotor. If you want to run the larger SF rotor you need to change out the rotor.

I thought it would be better to do the S rotor/bracket but found an SF rotor for $90 which I'd do in a heartbeat. Go fast 4 watchers.

Damper is a foam donut that is supposed to dampen brake noise. I don't have one on the front of either of my KLXs. Not necessary.

Thanks, so as long as I fit SF rotors to my S wheels of which i still only have the rear ! Then that's everything ? I just want to be sure before i go dropping another $90 on an SF rotor and then spend another $200-$300 for an S front, only to find out that there's more stuff i need.

Truth be told i kinda wish i'd just gone with another set of SF wheels, and just kept the Shinko's on one set of wheels and the road tires on the other pair... I live in SW Fl, and we have no rocks on our trails, only sand, and water, and the Shinko's have served me well thus far. The road tires are completely hopeless going thru sugar sand, but i've gone thru sand thats a foot deep and those shinko's have done the job... Plus i already have the 17" tires in both formats so no extra expenditure needed there!

Thing is i'm already over $200 in with an S rear wheel, sprocket and S rotor, (all came together) paid for and on its way to me (impulse buy without doing enough research) but i guess i could relist it and just take the loss on the chin, and wait out for a set of SF wheels.

Pretty sure the hubs are identical except color. If there was a difference you wouldn't be able to bolt the S rotor on your SM wheel.

Cool and thanks for all the input klx678, i'll be able to test fitment properly once i get the rear S wheel, For now i'll just swap over the rotors from the SF to S wheels.

still gotta find the S front... or a set of SF front and rear and sell the S rear.

i'm in no rush. Happy with the Shinko setup for now. I even have a no-mar tire changing station, so its only an extra 10mins to switch out the tires, if i really wanted to, using the same ol rims !
