I'll have to keep track next time I do an oil change but I'm pretty sure I put in a pinch more than specified. I like to warm the bike up and make sure the oil is just a hair below (almost touching) the max mark. I also keep it topped off in the same fashion.
Does anyone know how much is needed between min and max on the sight glass? I'm just curious if our bikes were ridden on min how low that actually is.

KLr? I have an 07 KLX331. Must have mistyped somewhere.
Keeping in mind, the .5 liters was after it blew some oil out (may have been more, but I definitely couldn't get it in the sight glass). What I did drain out smelt very burn, understandably after seeing the damage. So oil was making it to the cam. That, and the intake cam is fine as appear the rings, and there being no noticeable play in the rod.
I did have the copper colored specs in my last oil change. Again in this oil I took out. bout the same consistency, very fine. Perhaps the cam was on it's way out all along.
I'll grab some more pics tomorrow to show a better idea of what all happened. Meantime, the hunt is on... Wonder if Bill Blue may have some spares.

Based on how the oil is distributed to the top end I'd say that it may the result of a blockage in the cam cap. If the oil gallery gets some crap in it it will starve that section while leaving the rest bathed in oil. I'd bet a closer inspection on the cam cap will show the culprit. Good luck on finding a usable head.
