Default Difference between 1994 KLX250R and 2009 KLX250S

Hey guys, sorry for making another thread.

I talked to a guy with a 1994 KLX250R the other day. Looks to be same engine as ours, but when I asked him about it, he said that it delivers 30hp. I was a bit sceptical, but when I came home and looked it up, I believed him.
Kawasaki KLX250R

Why would a 1994 bike, with what looks to be the same engine as our modern bikes have more hp? KLX250S is listed as 22hp from factory. 8 Less than the 1994 one?!

Now I have been looking at part fisches, but I cannot really tell any difference between the cylinder, cams and such...so what could be the reason? Is there some overlooked potential here?

According to that link, power at the wheel is 23.5hp. That's around what the klx250s puts down totally uncorked and jetted.

Our 2006+ bikes stock are closer to 18 hp at the rear wheel.

The Aussie bikes are reported to be higher strung.

Someone may be embellishing on the power. Read the description on stock bike's inability to pull the front wheel up.

Or it could be that it is claimed horsepower by the advertising department.

Or a different dyno if actually a dyno reading. 10% difference is 2 hp or so and that isn't hard to believe.

In the US with a carb these bikes are 16-18 hp at the rear wheel which is a little sorry. The good news is with very few mods and just the ability to follow instructions nearly or better than a 20% gain is possible. The Honda XL's from around 1978 on were over 20 and some closer to 24 RWHP stock. But emissions have watered down the field. The other good news is the suspension on our bikes make anything 20 yrs old pretty outdated.

Yeah, they could actually put on a muffler that would flow a bit. Not very loud all considered either.

Of course there is the Marcelino cam mod that picks up the power some too.

Regardless, it gives us something to spend our money on and do - keeps us out of the bars... at least that's what I tell my wife.

Hi all, and I'm new to this forum..
I'm 51yo, living in down under.. and I worked for Kawasaki in Germany in the early 90's. mainly racing, from MX to world superbikes..(actually built race engines)
anyway.. I worked lots on KLX 650R and also the 250 version.
now I bought my son a klx250, 2007 mod.
had a close look..nothing changed from 93...
when the klx250R came out, with actually 32hp measured on my dyno... I wondered why...
klx250 had roughly 24 hp...
now my report.. which will bring some tears to some ppl in this forum..for wasting lots of money just to find 0.5hp., but keep reading..i'll provide you at the end with lots of horsepower..
so.. first thing..it must be the exhaust.. cos everything else was the same..i.e. piston, cams..
so..klx with R silencer.. wow..nice sound.. and result : no change at all..24hp at around 8000...
only real difference is the weight...
ok..lets look closer... opsie.. the carby... noo... can't be..
yes, I read right.. its a 32mm carbie instead of 34mm... (greetings to all with a TM36)
ok..lets think..faster gasflow.. yes..but not giving 8hp more..
looking deeper... ignition.. viola..there it is..
(can't remember if the ignition box was the same..but doesn't matter..
fact is.. the advance was a few degrees different
which made me change the advance in the KLX250..
BINGO !!!! 29hp at 11000rpm..it didn't change anything down low.. it just kept revving..
this..with a carby mod, different needle..and the vaccum hole to 3.2mm drilled) (I just put in a KLX300R needle) and this bike is really fun, without spending mega bucks on stuff that doesn't work..
now how do you change the advance..
a 3mm wide steel strip, 2mm thick, 15mm long.. tic welded onto the rotor, on the front part of the rotor. that's all...
bought myself now a klx250..and its going..
it came with the bomb header thingy.. but some had actually tested it on a dyno..and no diff.. i'll change it soon to original..and see how it is..
I hope that helped a bit

oh..forgot..and the missing 2-3 hp.. probably due to higher gasflow with the smaller carby.. so..bigger isn't always better...

IMO aside from the HP difference, i feel that any vehicle, be it a bike or a car or a truck, it seems that those that were built earlier seem to have better built quality and seem to last longer. its all linked to how our economic system works, companies need better profit so they build something with lower quality so that they can make quick bucks on maintenance and parts.

i have a Honda C90 (They used to call it the Honda Cub, initially came out with the C50 then the famous C70), this bike is built to last, i love the bike, its not a powerful bike but its a real work horse, i can trash it real good and the bike does not give any problems. check out this video :

hope you had a good laugh watching the bike drop 4 floors and still see it run!!

i guess they found out building bikes like this is bad for business, this is same for other items we buy nowadays which mostly originates from China, it is cheap but it breaks down easily so we end up spending more. yes we live in an insane world :P
