Instead of hardwiring your GPS why not just hook up a 12V cigarette lighter-type power port and plug into it with the power cord supplied with the GPS? A power port directly from the battery can be used to power or charge anything you care to plug in (cell phone, camera, etc.) as well as a plug-in point for a battery tender or other charger so you don't have to remove the seat to access the battery terminals.

Don't power your GPS via the USB port on the motorcycle. Get a good set of NiMH rechargeables; Powerex 2700mAh will go for a couple of days. The USB port will fail, possibly taking the whole unit out.

???? Uhhh, OK, but maybe a lightning bolt will strike the bike before that happens and fry both me and the GPS. Or maybe I'll get trampled by a herd of stampeding elephants just escaped from the circus.

Geez, the universe of things to worry about is unlimited, isn't it? Now where did I leave that Zoloft?

BTW, did you hear the NiMH batteries can overheat and cause a device meltdown or worse? I don't mean to worry you, but.....
