ORIGINAL: bmwhd

I will be doing an HID conversion of the headlight soon just as I did with my KLR650. A Bi-Xenon Hi/Low HID H4 system can be had for under $225 now and will pull only 35w. It has both high and low beam by means of a servo that moves the HID capsule into the proper position when you flick the switch. Puts out 3 times the light of ANY halogen bulb and gives you back 20w for other goodies.

That sounds really cool! Do you have a link?

Something else to consider is getting the stator rewound for higher output, by the likes of Ricky Stator, or the equivelant. If I recall, it wasn't that expensive, especially compared to HID lighting systems, probably in the area of $150-200. I'm not sure what the current prices are, though.

Here is a link to the install of the Bi-Xenon H4 HID kit in my old KLR. The process would be very similar on the KLX. The source of the HID kit in that old thread is defunct but others are discussed further down that are good. The kits are right at $200 now.

The other value these add is daytime con****uity. Cars really pick up the distinct blue light even during the day.

Have too admit that this electrical stuff is way over my head. I'm looking at a Candlepower Xenon XB3 Boosted Bright Light Premium Blue H-4 12 v 60/55 W replacement bulb that replace an H-4 bulb w/no mods or special installation. http://www.bikebandit.com/partsbandi...id~2149223.asp Can this bulb be used as a direct replacement on our bikes? Also looking at a Candlepower rotating LED tail/brake light that replaces a standard 1157 bulb. http://www.bikebandit.com/partsbandi...id~2149223.asp Can this be used without any mods[sm=WTFsgign.gif]

Great info, doesn't look to have too much along the lines of installation hassle. I'll hold off on purchasing until bmwhd gets one put in. My biggest gripe with the stock light was how narrow the beam seemed to be. Like I said I haven't ridden at night, just around sunset and it seemed like it wouldn't show the side of the road at all.

Hey bryantjt. I do quite a bit of night riding on my commute to work, and I can assure you that the headlight on dim is downright scary. You have very limited visibility too the side and too the front. My commute is 50 miles RT on a highway that is a popular hang out for the local deer. So vision is a very good thing too have. There has also been 4 motorcycle fatalaties in the past week in my area..2 of them were rear ended while sitting at a stop light, and the other were either head, on or the car turned directly in front of them. I want too see..and be seen.[sm=smiley11.gif]

Thats what I figured. My commute is only 14 miles at 3:30 am and there are several places along the way that are deer "hangouts" and all of a sudden rabbits are out quite considerably. For years I'd hardly ever see them, now its a few each week on my way to work, stupid things run along side the road and just as you get close they zip across both lanes.[:@]
