Your Dynojet kit doesn't come with a pilot jet. The pilot and enricher jets are active during starting, not the main jet. The pilot jet may be a little plugged. Get a new one and maybe while you're at it get a #38 and #40 as a larger one may work better for you, particularly if you are at low elevations. Consider drilling the enricher/starter/choke jet as mentioned above (this one is not replaceable).

Disable the compression release. Either remove the spring and leave them loose, they will throw out and be disengaged or, as I did, wire them locked out with some .090" wire. I just don't want them moving at all.

The 250 just doesn't need any compression release with electric start. The CR was a left over from the kick start 250/300, no idea why they left it there, it just adds more cost and makes starting harder by blowing part of the fuel charge out the exhaust before firing.

Tipping the bike and shutting off the fuel/letting it die out is a really obnoxious bandaid that I can never understand why people do it... it means something isnt working right and needs to be fixed.

Bikes are way too lean at startup stock. Drill starter jet and rejet to either DJ specs or KLXster specs. If the bike sits longer than 2-3 days the gas will go bad in the carb, drain and allow to refill.

Bike should start in 1-2 seconds anytime everytime. If it doesnt, something is WRONG

I agree with the jetting and also recommend the compression release maneuver too. There are guys running the KLX650s without the compression release and it cranks way harder than the 250.

My jetted/drilled compression releasel-less MCM 250 will start in about a second and be off choke in 30 seconds on a normal day. NO PROBLEMO! Like I said, I also tested it starting at 8 degrees F, did fine.

klx678,

I un-disabled my KACR (and MCM) when I installed my 331 kit and while it still starts good, it doesn't even come close to "snapping to life" like it did with the KACR disabled. Warm starts seem to require a slight bumping the throttle to get it to light more often than not.

Any GUESS on whether the extra cc's of the BB would be too much for the starter?

I realize I am asking for your opinion so I wouldn't hold you to anything factual!

TIA,

TC

... add to the above:

Is it the displacement or the C/R that makes it harder for the starter to turn?

I kind of doubt the bigger engine would affect it much. I never looked, but it would not surprise me if the basic starter is the same as the 650 and there are riders doing away with the CR on them. Thing is if you found you needed it you can always go back and stick the spring on it.

I even swapped from 128 35 pilot to a 140/2N with 38 pilot and starting is even better. It starts about as soon as you hot the starter, under 1/2 second.

The best thing you can do is uncover your mixture screw and go about 2-2.5 out. Btw my stock bike was only 1/2 turn out stock!!! It was an absolute nightmare to start hot or cold
