I just bought a 2006 KLX 250 with only 256 miles on it last weekend, & now it won't start!

When I go to start it turns over the first few tries then it just clicks. It started 2 times & ran for a few minutes but when I went to let the choke off it died & would not start again.

I have connected booster cables to the battery but still the same, turns over the first try or two then clicks, even if I try with the booster cables connected to my running car!

I can't find the spark plug to check it. Can anyone describe where it is or a picture?

I rode it for about 100 miles this past weekend when I bought it. The guy I bought it from put some new gas in it when I bought it. It's frustrating that now it won't start, maybe I should have bought that china bike brand new for $1200 less for my first bike to learn to ride on the road.

Any suggestions would be appreciated or if any other threads already cover this please let me know... Thanks!

 

Are you sure you have gas and the switch is on and not off? Dumb Q - but just want to make sure. Sounds like it's out of gas.

As for the spark plug, it's left side of motor, sticking out of the head - has a big black wire coming off of it.. Can't miss it

 

Yes, it has gasoline, I looked in the tank & can't see it but can hear a good bit sloshing when I rock it.

I found the spark plug, thanks. Boy it sure is tedious taking the plug off & putting a new one on! I went ahead & bought a new spark plug & battery. I will pick up the battery later tonight or tomorrow morning after O'Reilly has charged it. Hopefully after the spark plug & new battery it will start...

If not, I don't know what to do...

Its your battery for sure. Have you tried charging it? My Battery Tender DVD40 can almost bring any battery back to life. Mostly....I'm on my second klx battery.

For fun while you are waiting on your new battery....disconnect existing battery and hook the klx up to your car battery....you can use jumpers....bet she starts right up unless you pop a fuse, but regardless she will crank and crank with no click.

 

THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT MY 06 DID TO ME 5 days after I bought======It would crank over slower than usual or it would rapidly cycle the starter relay========I am a DC electrical specialist===SO I ran out and bought a battery cause I am a expert LOL well the battery did the same thing=====turns out I had a bad ground at the starter motor itself====I unbolted one of the starter bolts at the left side of the bike====I ran a 10gauge wire straight from the starter to the battery====and it instantly cranked faster and started============I bet if you tried to compression start your bike it would start just fine===After buying a 75dollar battery cause the bike wouldnt start on a weekend and my voltmeter was at work. If you have a voltmeter put the red lead on the negative cable at the battery. Then put the black lead on the chrome starter bolt(either one) on the left side of the bike. Crank the engine and if the meter reads ANYTHING over .4 or .5volts. You have a bad ground, mine was 2.2 volts. Meaning 2.2 volts of electrical potential was not returning to the battery. Good luck and keep us posted .......BTW if you want to try to jump start your bike. Hook the positive cable to the battery like normal. AND the negative cable straight to frame or if you can clip it to the starter motor(bolts) try that.

 

yup, thats why I suggested the car battery....if that don't work, cancel the battery order. I always have ground issues on two smoke outboard starters.

Oh I got an 06 battery way cheaper check out BatteryUSA outta Miami, even with shipping good price.

 

I had to pay full price for my battery cause the bike started having a ground issue on a sunday and there was only one bike shop open. I have a perfect battery as a spare now. I put the tender on it once in a while and make sure its topped up in.

You mentioned that this was your first bike, I just want to make sure you know that bikes don't charge batteries the same way cars do. They need to be brought up to speed usually above 30 mph. Putting around in a parking lot all day long will run the battery down quick and leave you wondering WTF happened.

 

You'd be correct in most cases, but this bike charges the batt just fine right at idle. I actually hooked-up an ammeter, votmeter and some exta loads when I was looking into heated gear. It has a pretty beefy (for its class) 3 phase alternator. The charging system puts out between 13.3 and 14.3 volts even at idle with an extra 65W headlight hooked-up

This isn't just an off road bike, with lights and batteries added on. It actually was designed for dual sport use.
