1st 2016 Spring Ride
Decided to dust off the cobwebs from the KLX and go for a ride. The sky was completely blue, and it was 70 degrees out. Not typical for this time of year and certainly not typical for where I live. So in no particular order, here ya go.
Windfall across the road, nearly 40 inch Spruce tree.
30 miles up and I hit some snow. 3,000 ft. elevation
Here is the before pic from 5 years ago. The Forest Service spent over a million to fix this washout.
And the after.
Ran into a Cedar theft site.
I tried to hide my other chins.....fail!
Old slide
Well that's it, and that's all I got to say about that.

Sure. Western Red Cedar which is a great product for shake roofs, and fencing is much sought after for its durable resistance to decay over time. .......too much? LOL
Ok here's the real deal. Cedar in the woods here on the Olympic Peninsula is more or less a sort of protected tree species. Not in the fact that it can't be cut down, and is actually taken out of the woods in an included timber sale.
Sometimes even single trees that fall during a wind storm or even ones that have been down for a hundred years and buried under the ground can be taken as long as it is done legally.
However it is highly regulated and accounted for whether its on State land and Federal timber lands of which I was riding on yesterday. In order to remove this either in a log timber sale or as a single log harvest, you have to get a permit from the land owner to be able to buy the sale of said cedar log which is usually not cheap, then you are issued a cut and haul permit.
So closely regulated is this wood product that if you are caught with just one of these blocks in your vehicle or on your person with out the proper documentation, its is a federal crime punishable of many, many dollars and a substantial stay in the "Jared from subway" Motel.
The reason that I know this was a theft site is that you are not allowed to leave a mess even after a legitimate sale of this stuff. It looks like it was cut a few months ago, the good wood picked clean and the rest left. Most likely some Meth Heads got a hold of it and made off with it at night. I've been to several of these sites over the years. This one looks to be a blow down but some of the sites show 1000 year old trees being cut down and packed off to be sold for $600-$1000 a cord.
Anyway that's the short of it.

Thanks, deej, I appreciate the thoroughness of your reply. We don't have anything like western cedar where I ride, but it is not unusual to see postings that permits are required for cutting.
