Take it to a shop, and get them to fix it, it shouldn't be more than$300.00 to pull it apart and replace the seal. If you like the bike that much it will be worth it.

Well I'm a maintenance Mechanic, and I wold not attempt it. Go to the shop and at least get an estimate. If you don't trust the shops around there you can always bring it across the water to Port Angeles where I bought my bike. A better dealer you will never find.

This thread is on page 1 of google results when searching for simply "kdx200e". Since I have been wrenching on mine for a couple months and endlessy searching the web for solutions to different problems, I thought I would add some info to this thread. Just in case there is someone like me also searching for info on 1989 - 1994 KDX200's. I have done a good bit of reading on these forums, as well as several others, but this would be my very 1st post. Funny I'm using it to revive a very dead thread. I see several of these old bikes around though, and the proliferation of knowledge is always a good thing.

I hope the orignal poster got this problem solved back in 07, and without paying a shop an arm and a leg. The 89 has a single seal for the water pump and it tends to go bad. When this happens, water easily gets forced into the right side cover to mix with the transmission oil. This is a VERY easy repair. You do not need to split cases or anything. Remove the water pump cover, and right side cover. The seal that needs replaced is IN the right side cover behind the water pump drive gear. If it's an 89, replace the single seal with the TWO seals from a 90-94. They will fit perfectly and I'm told they will last a while lot longer. We'll see how it works out in mine .
