Usually (aside from flat head engines from the 1940's and 50's or so) look at the valve cover. If the spark plug(s) go to the top of the head and there is no valve cover, it's 2 stroke. If there is a valve cover it's 4-stroke.
Example: On this engine there are fins on the head, but no valve cover.
This is a bat**** crazy looking engine, but notice how the spark plug screws into the head and there's a valve cover atop the engine? (the box with tons of nuts and fins)? That's a 4-stroke engine. Since 2-stroke engines don't have valves there's no need for a valve cover, cam shafts, rocker arms, etc. The top of the cylinder head is the top of the engine.
