1989 650SX
I have a 1989 650SX in excellent condition. Last summer it was hard to start it, but it ran fine. I installed a primer kit, and it started up perfectly every time and ran for the whole time out there in the water. I winterized, put the cover on it, and it sat outside for a mild winter, with only 8 inches of snow the whole year. I go to start it today, and its up fine, but stalls quickly. If i keep putting gas into the carb it will stay running, but once the gas is out of the carb, it stalls immediately. Any suggestions of how to go about fixing this?

It sounds like you either need to rebuild he carb or the fuel pump. Is it the original carb setup? If so you will have a fuel pump on the inside of the hull. You can remove the output line while cranking it and see if fuel comes out. If there is no fuel you will need to rebuild or replace it. If fuel does come out you will have to go to work on the carb. Good luck, Rock

Ok so i don't have a fuel pump, its an aftermarket carb, an ocean pro vortex. I took it apart, and one of the diaphram's[i thin kthats what you call it] has a very small needle point size hole in it. Could this be the source of the problem? Every other seal is perfect.

Sounds like you prolly found it. I would try to find out what caused the hole and see if I could fix that. Hopefully it is just dryrot. Now you just have to figure out what carb it is. I think the ocean pro vortex is just the type of flame arrestor (air filter). It should be either a Kehin or a Mikuni carb. Once you get that figured out you will have to find out what size it is. To do that you will need a set of metric calipers and you will need to measure the bottom bore diameter of the carb. The upper (inlet) is usually larger to help create a ram air effect as the air fuel mix flows throught the carb. If you can send me a pic I could at least tell you what brand of carb it is (it really should be stamped on the side of the carb).
A little tip:
If all of the fuel lines go into a round looking thing on the side of it it is a Mikuni BN or I series carb.
If it has a big diamond shaped plate on the side of it it is a Mikuni SBN (Super BN).
If all of the fuel lines go into a big rectangle on the side of it it is a Kehin.
Good Luck
