Default 1987 KZ1000p Clutch Problem

Hello,

New member, I just purchased a 1987 KZ1000-p for $220 from some kid that didn't have time to mess with it anymore, bike runs smooth, all gears seem good, however the clutch will not engage and I can't figure out why. Not real familiar with the KZ clutch systems and I'm hoping someone can help me out. I basically stole the bike for the price and yes, I could hard shift but I don't want to bend fork/teeth and really want to fix the clutch. I can pull the clutch lever in and hear the throwout hit the pushrod but the lever doesn't return to it's original position when you release it, it goes back to about 3/4 of the way out. Please help me out here. I can also crank the bike and drop it in first with the back wheel off the ground and pull the clutch but it acts as if the clutch isn't engaging at all. I'm stumped and it's probably something extremely simple judging by the looks of the entire clutch assembly it seems like a fairly simple clutch. I just don't know what to do and really want to get this thing on the road.

Thanks In Advance,
NATE

G'day mate,

Start simple
Clutch lever freeplay
Clutch lever adjustment
Cable moving freely / lubricated
Cable ends not binding
Fresh oil

Then move on to
Clutch springs all there / proper length
Clutch plates proper thickness, not damaged
Good luck

thanks. I'm leaning towards the throwout worm going to the pushrod because I took the right side of the clutch cover off and the plates (I didn't remove them) seem to be free thanks to some slight tapping with a hammer around the outside if the clutch. I think I am going to try a new cable/throwout and see what happens from there.

keep you posted

I'm thinking that maybe my clutch release spring is malfunctioning because its ugly, bent and all the pictures i've seen online seem to show the spring perfectly (at least near perfect) straight between the hole in the case where the cable comes through and the clutch release. I think i'm going to try replacing the spring and hope its as simple as a $4.95 release spring. My dad told me I should probably take the clutch plates out and at least clean them with an emory cloth and reinstalling so might do that as well. got fresh 10w30 oil to put in it when i'm done. wish me luck
