Default VN800 Carb problems?

I'm looking for some guidance with my 1996 VN800.

Recently stripped and cleaned my carb because I had fuel coming out through the air intake.

Now that problem seems better however the mixture smells a bit rich and when I'm cruising the bike seems to lurch a little occasionally.

Any suggestions of what might be the problem and/or solution would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Welcome to KF

What settings are you running on your pilot screws? Did you check your float heights after cleaning? And are you 100% possitive in your carb cleaning? Those bleed holes are small. The carb clamps on good and the carbs are in place? Did you check the carb synchronization after the install?

I've not changed the pilot screws at all, I only removed the top and bottom covers and gave a good clear out with aerosol carb cleaner.

I dont know an easy way to check/adjust my float level as I dont have any clear tubing that i could use and the haynes manual doesnt specify another way.

I'll check the clamps when I get home tonight, as for carb sync this isnt necessary as I only have one carb!

Cheers

hahaha, was curious on that one as well. I only have the vn1500 and the vn2000 manuals to go by as a reference.

You do not have to change the pilot screws, but at how many turns out are they? The "good clear out with aerosol carb cleaner" will not clean out the pilot holes.

good luck

Do you think that your throttle cables are adjusted correctly and your air filter is clean?

I have a brand new air filter and spark plugs to go in tonight.

What is the reccommended means of clearing the pilot holes?

I'll check how many turns they are later as well, I guess I need to take them out to clean them?

Do your air filter, fuel filter and plugs first. Then go from there

Thanks, it doesnt actually have a fuel filter, I was considering getting an inline filter and putting it in, and also running some sort of petrol additive through to clean up the fuel systems a bit, help prevent rusting in the tank etc. The bike has only done 8k miles so it's been sitting around doing nothing a lot, just needs a bit of TLC I think.

Thanks for your help so far, I'll let you know how it runs with new sparks and filters.
