Default Warning lights on 97 1500 classic

Hey guys. I'm new here and to biking. Just started last year. I have a 97 Vulcan 1500 Classic. Both the oil pressure & water temp lights are staying on at all times. Checked out the engine. I have oil pressure, cooling fan comes on and goes off (so I'm assuming that the water temp shouldn't be hot enough to turn on the warning light). The lights stay on constantly. I believe I've narrowed it down to the water temperature switch but do not know how to check it. It's $87 for a new one and as I'm finding out when it comes to bikes, $87 doesn't go far so I don't want to spend it there if it's not necessary. Does anybody know how to check the water temp switch? It has a single prong. I was told by friends to check resistance. I'm not an electrician but I do have a multimeter. Any help would be great.
